Growing tourism in Fiji provides opportunities for local businesses to provide goods and services to the industry. This sector has mostly been reliant on imported products, and limited tourism activities are available for cruise ship tourists particularly in and around Suva and Pacific Harbour.. Around 40 cruise ships per year dock at Suva and this number is expected to increase in the coming years. However, the tourism experience in Suva is rated by the cruise ship passengers is relatively low in comparison to most other regional cruise ship destinations.
MDF is partnering with South Sea Cruises (SSC), established in 1968 and one of Fiji’s most experienced cruise operators. MDF is supporting SSC in engaging a consultant to undertake a feasibility study to identify products and activities available in the Suva-Pacific Harbour corridor and neighbouring outer islands for cruise ship tourists. This will allow activity providers and retailers of goods (including handicraft sellers) to benefit from additional income and creating employment opportunities for both men and women in this sector. At the same time, the Fijian tourism experience becomes more diversified.
