In Pakistan, MDF works in two agricultural sub-sectors and one manufacturing sector, namely Horticulture, Dairy and Meat, and Leather. In Horticulture MDF aims to boost supply to growing domestic markets and to export; tapping into this unmet demand will result in additional income for large numbers of smallholder farmers.
MDF has divided its livestock work into two sectors: Dairy and Meat, and Leather. Dairy and Meat has a high potential to supply a growing domestic market and export market and there are large numbers of smallholder farmers involved at the production level. Improvement in the volumes and quality of supply of dairy and meat products to buyers will translate to higher incomes for farmers.
Leather is a downstream sector to livestock. MDF help the sector to tap into the demand for finished leather goods in export markets. As private sector players in leather expand, they will provide additional employment to a larger number of poor urban workers, many of whom are women.
