Kashmala Agro Seed Company (KAS) is a company owned by Shahansha Khan who has been an entrepreneur, an agronomist, and a member of the community organization in Loralai Baluchistan. KAS has been in the business of cultivation, production, multiplication and selling of good quality yielding seed of wheat and barley. Kashmala started the business of cereal crops seed and vegetable seed production through Farmers Market Collective facilitated by Food Agriculture Organization (FAO). FAO provided a sowing drill, seed cleaner and grader to enhance the capacity of Kashmala for growing wheat and cereal seed. KAS wanted to expand into vegetable seed production through contract farming and processing.
MDF supported Kashmala in:
(1) Procuring vegetable seed processing machinery for processing of vegetable seed ;
(2) Marketing and distribution activities that will promote the awareness and the benefits of its vegetable seed to farmers through farmer meetings, demonstration plots and brochures. This intervention helped KAS to reach out to small farmers in Baluchistan and give them access to high quality affordable onion, carrot, and peas seed and information on how to cultivate the seed in order to get the maximum yield and better quality vegetables from the product. Thus, through the intervention, MDF helped Kashmala to set up a formal vegetable seed business in Baluchistan. Employment was generated at the facility level and through an increased requirement for farm labor.
