Foot Mouth Disease in cattle has been defined as “a severe, highly contagious viral disease of livestock with significant economic impact”, which results in losses in milk production and weight, fertility, miscarriage in pregnant animals and death in the new born animals. The access to preventive medicine is limited among the farmers. Importers of branded vaccines have limited outreach in terms of marketing, and their distribution network is limited to bigger settlements due to difficulty in transporting the product to distant areas.Where vaccines are accessible to farmers, inability of the suppliers to maintain the cold chain for distribution results in inefficacy and loss of trust in vaccines.
Government outreach services are limited as well as not effective and vaccination is an important area in which there is massive need for educating farmers regarding importance of vaccinating their animals using quality vaccine. Farmers are unaware of the net benefits of preventive medication as compared with curative medication.
Mustafa Brothers (MB) was established in 2004 and is in the business of veterinary pharmaceuticals, vaccines, vitamins and medicated feed additives. It is the exclusive importer and distributor of Arriah vaccine imported from Russia) which is used for prevention against the Food Mouth Disease (FMD). The disease affects cattle and swine as well as sheep, goats, and other cloven-hoofed ruminants. FMD is a difficult vaccine to make and very few local vaccine manufacturers are making it and quality of the locally manufactured vaccines is not very effective.MDF will support Mustafa Brothers in hiring of resources for establishing of distribution network and extension services, in procurement of necessary infrastructure required for effective distribution of vaccines and preventive medicine and in rolling out awareness and outreach program.
