About MDF

The Market Development Facility (MDF) is an Australian Government-funded multi-country initiative that promotes sustainable development in its partner countries.

We work with businesses, government and other organisations to identify and develop profitable and scalable business opportunities that help reduce poverty, empower women economically and combat climate change. We currently operate in Fiji, Timor-Leste, Samoa, Vanuatu, Tonga and Sri Lanka.

MDF is funded by the Australia Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and is implemented by Palladium, in partnership with Swisscontact.

About the Opportunity

MDF is seeking an Economic & Market Insights Manager to lead our market intelligence agenda, providing actionable analysis on a range of economic and business themes.

In this role, you will work closely with MDF leadership and country teams to produce high-quality research that supports our strategic objectives. Your insights will inform key internal stakeholders, industry players and government partners, to help drive strategic decision making.

You’ll dive deep into market systems, emerging sectors, and cross-cutting themes like gender, inclusion, and climate change. From assessing the impact of El Niño on agriculture to exploring the business case for solar energy in Timor Leste, your work will cover a diverse and impactful range of topics. Key responsibilities include:

  • • Lead MDF’s market intelligence efforts, setting priorities and methodologies.
  • • Conduct and support in-country and desk research, ensuring high-quality analysis.
  • • Produce clear, concise reports for diverse audiences, from business communities to government stakeholders.
  • • Mentor and train colleagues, contributing to MDF’s learning and communication efforts.

We are looking for an individual who will bring:

  • • Proven experience in business, investment, or economic development research.
  • • Exceptional communication skills, capable of translating complex data into actionable insights.
  • • Willingness to travel extensively (10-12 weeks per year).
  • • Strong interpersonal skills, with experience managing cross-cultural teams.
  • • Ability to work autonomously and manage multiple tasks under tight deadlines.
  • • Degree in economics, business, finance or professional background in business or economic journalism is preferred, but not essential.
