Quality agricultural inputs are essential for improving agricultural productivity, climate resilience and rural incomes in Fiji.
Yet for decades, many farmers — particularly smallholders and those in remote areas — could not easily access inputs, affecting agricultural production. Input suppliers did not have a wide footprint across Fiji: marketing was limited and distribution and retail networks were fragmented. If farmers used inputs at all, they were expensive due to high transport costs.
MDF has worked in agricultural inputs since program’s inception, partnering with commercial input suppliers and state entities to improve Fiji’s agricultural productivity. MDF’s partnership with agricultural input supplier Organic Plus Pte Limited (formerly Baywater Engineering Pte Ltd) and Post Fiji (the national postal service) focuses on testing new commercial practices and expanding marketing, distribution and retail channels, to enable wider use of inputs and raise productivity. There are now emerging signs of system-wide changes in how agricultural inputs reach underserved areas.
