Delivering climate-smart agriculture to remote communities
Across Fiji, climate change is reshaping the agricultural landscape. Farmers are facing unpredictable rainfall, leading to increased erosion, nutrient loss and declining organic matter. For farmers in remote areas in Fiji, these challenges are compounded by limited access to quality agricultural products. Many rely on costly transport or informal supply chains, making it difficult to adopt sustainable practices that could improve climate resilience.
To address this, MDF has partnered with Post Fiji to pilot AgroPost, a distribution model that leverages the national post’s extensive network of retail outlets and logistics to deliver climate-smart products—such as organic soil conditioners, climate-resilient seed varieties and small farm machinery—to rural communities. AgroPost works by stocking agricultural inputs at local post offices and using Post Fiji’s existing logistics network to distribute them to remote areas. This enables farmers to access quality inputs closer to home and utilise integrated payment options like M-PAiSA and Sole’, which are available at the post offices.
To complement this initiative and raise awareness among the farming community about the availability of climate-smart agricultural products via local post offices, MDF is also supporting several agri-input and mechanisation businesses, including partners Organic Plus and Krishan’s Farm Implements, to host pop-up market days around the country
