Investing in adaptation and mitigation
Businesses across the Indo-Pacific experience climate change through more frequent extreme weather events and highly unpredictable weather patterns. Their markets are adapting to climate change as countries, businesses and consumers look to diversify their economies, strengthen supply chains and adjust consumption patterns to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Firms see climate change as an opportunity as well as a risk. Investing in measures that reduce vulnerability to climate change is now core business. Firms can protect themselves against losses and increase their profits by adapting to changing circumstances. The ability to quantify and reduce emissions is becoming increasingly important in many industries, determining access to certain markets.
Many supply chains are made up of smallholder farmers or small businesses. They too must be able to adapt to climate risks and adopt more climate-resilient practices, if they are to benefit from market opportunities.
There are also emerging opportunities to invest in women’s resilience to climate change. Innovations in climate-specific financing solutions and information sharing can improve women’s participation in agriculture, and enable businesses to build more resilient supply chains.
