IWD 2024 – Supporting High-quality Chocolate Factory in Timor-Leste

On International Women’s Day 8 March 2023, MDF celebrates the significant roles played by women in building prosperous economies. Among these inspiring entrepreneurs is Patricia Madalena Mendes, the owner and founder of Patricia Fresh Lounge, a valued partner of MDF. She started her journey in 2021 when she established the company to produce high-quality chocolate under the brand name Patty’s Series. Quickly, it became a leader in quality, price and market share in Timor Leste. It produces over 1,000 bars of chocolate per month (processing 250 kg of cocoa beans) and sells through six supermarkets in Dili.

Currently, the factory employs six staff (four males and two females). Patricia aims to expand women employment opportunities through her company. Despite challenges in meeting market demand, Patricia’s determination remains unwavering. Recently, MDF Timor-Leste partnered with Patricia Fresh Lounge to develop a centralised cocoa processing centre, aiming to expand chocolate production and explore export markets. This collaboration not only enhances Patricia’s business but also aims to scale up direct sourcing from farmers while also providing training and information on better processing practices.

Patricia’s journey exemplifies the spirit of women-led entrepreneurship. With MDF’s support, she continues to empower her community and contribute to economic growth.
