SCCI and MDF Soft-Launch Renewable Energy Report 2024
The Samoa Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SCCI), in collaboration with MDF, recently soft-launched its Renewable Energy Report 2024—a key step in understanding how businesses view climate change, sustainability, and renewable energy.
The report was launched at SCCI’s March Members Meeting, hosted by Digicel Samoa, and was attended by SCCI members, representatives from the Samoan Government, and the First Secretary for the Australian High Commission in Samoa, Greg Furness.
The survey captured a diverse range of businesses—44% micro, 27% small, 16% medium, and 13% large—with 11% as paid members and 89% as non-paid members.
Some key insights include:
64% businesses reported severe effects from cyclones, heavy rains, and floods, leading to infrastructure damage, reduced productivity, and financial losses.
39% of respondents have a limited understanding of solar energy, mainly due to affordability and competing business priorities.
4% remain uncertain about electric vehicles (EVs), citing concerns over EV infrastructure, reliability, technical support, and practicality.
21% favour grants for EVs, while 15% seek financial support for renewable initiatives.
The report calls for stronger collaboration between government and the private sector, with a focus on training SMEs in renewable energy to boost sustainability, drive cost savings, and reduce environmental impacts.
